All of the food we distribute to our customers is based off the USDA MyPlate to support a well-balanced diet. Ribka Getachew is the Director of the NYC Good Food Purchasing Policy (GFPP) Campaign. Ribka leads, mobilizes and supports the NYC-GFPP Coalition in all activities related to advancing the adoption of the program in New York City. The GFPP encourages large institutions to use the enormous strength of our City's food procurement power to improve the local and regional food systems in the areas of workers' rights, environmental sustainability, local economies, nutrition, animal welfare, and seeks to deeply infuse racial equity and transparency practices into the food system. The GFPP aims to hold large vendors accountable to better practices, while also ensuring that small and historically marginalized vendors (such as Black, Indigenous & POC farmers and food producers) have more opportunities to contract with our public agencies.

Ribka’s career has been guided by her strong quest for racial equity and justice. Previously, Ribka utilized food-systems knowledge and cultivated her organizing skills to protect threatened green-spaces, support the envisioning and building up of local food infrastructures in New York City, harness community power to spark policy transformation, and create culinary and food justice education programs. She also worked at the Innocence Project to advance the exonerations of individuals who had been incarcerated for crimes they did not commit.

Sheryll Durrant is an urban farmer, educator, and food justice advocate. She has been the Resident Garden Manager at Kelly Street Garden (KSG) in the South Bronx since 2016. Her work has included developing community-based urban agriculture projects, providing expertise and technical assistance for gardens within supportive housing developments, and she currently serves as Board President for Just Food. Sheryll has led workshops and spoken on issues related to urban agriculture and food justice for many key organizations and was part of the 2019-2020 HEAL School of Political Leadership cohort. As a former Design Trust fellow for the Farming Concrete project, she is now responsible for communications and outreach for the data collection platform that helps urban farmers and gardeners measure the impact or their work.

Kelly Street Garden exists to engage the community and help residents learn how to better their relationship with food through active participation and care of the garden. The garden's focus has become one of alleviating food insecurity, while providing a learning and healing environment through intensive community involvement. In 2020, KSG distributed shares to 70-110 families per week during its market season, plus provided surplus produce to local partners. In addition to its food work, the garden exists as a refuge for healing and creativity. It attracts those who have a deep wish to affect the life of their immediate community, while engaging in a process of addressing the historic trauma of their neighborhoods. The practice of putting one's hands in the soil brings a sense of calm and release from the daily stresses of modern life.
