The USDA announced it is requiring SNAP-authorized retailers to stock a wider range of staple and perishable foods in order to participate in the program. The administration says it wants to increase access to ‘real food.’ On the surface, that sounds reasonable. But the real issue here is choice, and whether we trust low-income families to make decisions for themselves.

In Episode 20 of Hangry for Change, Greg Silverman, CEO of the Westside Campaign Against Hunger, talks with Scott French, the NYC Human Resources Administrator. Together, they explore new SNAP work requirements and their impact on food-insecure New Yorkers. With many people unsure about who qualifies, what exemptions exist, and what happens if benefits are lost, the conversation aims to bring clarity. French also shares what it takes to be a public worker responsible for delivering benefits to millions of residents. He shares how his unique career path shapes his approach, with a focus on flexibility, problem-solving, and helping people stay connected to essential food support. The episode highlights what’s ahead and why strong partnerships between government, nonprofits, and advocates are critical as need continues to grow.
